Anonymous asked: How reliable are bc pills? I take a bc pill every day the same exact time but i always fear that it'll somehow fail. I always hear stories of women on the pill who have gotten pregnant anyway. Do I have anything to worry about?
You should really ask your doctor about this because they will be able to discuss it with more specificity to your situation.
If a birth control pill is taken as directed it should be 99.9% effective at preventing a pregnancy (which means that it does not protect from pregnancy 0.1% of the time and yes, some people get pregnant and have really shitty luck by being part of that 0.1%). HOWEVER. 76% of pill users and 49% of condom users who get abortions did not use their contraceptive methods correctly, which obviously reduces the effectiveness of a contraceptive device.
It’s also important to note that even if you DO use the pill, there are a few factors that can influence its effectiveness even with perfect use, such as if a person is taking antibiotics or is overweight.
I don’t really know if you have anything to worry about because it depends on many factors, but your doctor would probably be able to make a better assessment regarding that particular part of your question.
